General comment on data set | Dataset developed within the ARCADIA project in the context of the Ph.D. of Federica Carollo (Politecnico di Milano). The dataset relates to recycling 1 kg of wood in Italy. The dataset is composed of 2-unit processes: 1) avoided the production of plywood with a substitution ratio assumed of 1:0,6; 2) Particle board production (The Process taken by Ecoinvent 3.8 database was modified by excluding the wood chips, pulpwood, sawdust (et similar)). |

Technology description including background system | Particleboard is manufactured by mixing wood particles or flakes with a resin and forming the mix into a sheet. The raw material for the particles is fed into a disc chipper with between four and sixteen radially arranged blades. The particles are first dried, after which any oversized or undersized particles are screened out. In liquid form, resin is sprayed through nozzles onto the particles. Several types of resins are commonly used. Amino-formaldehyde-based resins are the best performing when considering cost and ease of use. Urea melamine resins offer water resistance, with increased melamine offering enhanced resistance. Phenol formaldehyde is typically used where the panel is used in external applications due to the increased water resistance provided by phenolic resins and the color of the resin resulting in a darker panel. Melamine urea phenolic formaldehyde resins exist as a compromise. To enhance the panel properties even further the use of resorcinol resins typically mixed with phenolic resins are used, but this is usually used with plywood for marine applications and is a rare occasion in panel production. Good the Reliability; Very Good the Geographical representativeness; Very Good the Time representativeness; Very Good the Technological representativeness. |
