General comment on data set Dataset developed according to Arcadia project Methodology (Report: “Metodologia per gli studi di filiera della Banca Dati italiana LCA”). LCA study of Cement production (report: “STUDIO LCA DELLA FILIERA DEL CEMENTO”).The dataset refers to the national average cement representative of the main types of cement defined by the UNI EN 197-1 produced in Italy, in particular: Portland cement (CEM I) and blended Portland cement (CEM II) (with total of 86%), pozzolanic cements (12%) and blast furnace cement (2%.). Data have been provided by AITEC/Federbeton and collected for the development of the EPD (Environmental Product Declaration) of the Italian medium gray cement.

Technological representativeness
Technology description including background system 1t of average cement produced in Italy. The cement production process includes the clinker and cement production stages. Clinker is produced from natural raw materials (such as limestone, clay, gypsum, marl and others) which are crushed, finely ground, homogenised and fired in a blast furnace. Once out, the clinker is cooled and ground in the mills with the addition of other natural raw materials (mainly gypsum and limestone) and other materials/additives to obtain the final homogeneous powder (the cement). All the processes of the clinker and cement production stages, including transports and emissions to air, are foreground processes, modelled using primary data. Particularly: • Average data provided by the Italian Cement Techno-Economic Association (AITEC) for the years 2019 and 2020, representing 16.4% and 17% of national production respectively. Data provided by AITEC/Federbeton have been collected for the development of the EPD (Environmental Product Declaration) of the italian medium gray cement. • National average emission factors for the year 2019 (ISPRA, 2019) relating to clinker production (blast furnace process). • The study by Rigamonti et al. (2012) for modeling secondary solid fuel (SSF) production • Water consumption is modelled using primary data provided by a company part of the working group For the background processes (raw material in input) EcoInvent database (v. 3.7.1) cut-off datasets were used.

The review was performed in compliance with Arcadia Metodology: “Metodologia per gli studi di filiera della Banca Dati italiana LCA” and ISO 14040-44 norms. The dataset has been assessed limited to the foreground data collected during the supply chain studies. Each dataset has been evaluated based on the following 4 criteria: 1. Technological Representativeness; 2. Time Representativeness; 3. Geographical Representativeness; 4. Reliability In this contest the Reliability is “good”
Subsequent review comments
The study was judged by the reviewer as compliant with both ISO 14040-44 and Arcadia methodology
